Tasso+ on an upper arm

How it works

  1. How the Tasso+ home test works

    Read the film’s words

Your home test uses Tasso+, a small device that sits on your upper arm.

It isn’t a full blood test. A tiny lancet inside the device takes a small sample, with no needle into a vein.

Put it on and press its button. It does the rest in a few minutes.

There’s no finger prick, and no clinic to visit.

The lab asks you to drink water beforehand: it helps your blood flow, which makes it easier to collect a good sample.

Post it back to our partner laboratory in Northern Ireland. Postage is paid both ways.

Results come 2 to 3 working days after the lab receives your sample, ready to add to your timeline.

Read your kit’s own instructions before you start.

    Step 1

    Take your sample

Put Tasso+ on your upper arm and press its button. A tiny lancet takes a small sample in a few minutes. No finger prick.

  2. Step 2

    Post it back

In the prepaid envelope, to a UKAS-accredited lab.

  3. Oestradiol results on a timeline, with HRT gel shaded from when it started

    Step 3

    See your results

On your timeline, 2 to 3 working days after the lab has it.

Using gel or cream? Put it on your legs, not your arms, on the day of your test.

Result
OestradiolThe main oestrogen, and what most HRT replaces.

It shows how much oestrogen from your patch, gel, spray or tablets reaches your blood. It varies with the type of HRT and the time since your last dose, so test at the same time each time.

TestosteroneWomen make it too, and it falls with age.

If you're prescribed testosterone, your prescriber checks your level stays within the usual range for women.

Free testosteroneThe part of testosterone your body can use.

Most testosterone is held by SHBG, and can't be used. Free testosterone is worked out from your testosterone, SHBG and albumin.

Free androgen indexFAITestosterone compared with SHBG.

Another way of showing how much testosterone is free to use. Your prescriber may look at it beside your testosterone.

SHBGA protein that carries hormones in the blood.

Oestrogen taken as tablets can raise it, which leaves less testosterone free to use.

FSHThe brain's signal to the ovaries.

It rises as the ovaries slow down, and HRT can bring it down. On its own, it isn't a guide to your HRT dose.

LHWorks alongside FSH.

It rises around the menopause too, and is read with FSH.

No clinician write-up: each result comes with a plain explanation, and your prescriber decides any change. Postage paid both ways. Not a test for whether you're in the menopause: NICE advises against hormone tests for that after 45.

Questions, answered plainly.

Who is the HRT check for?

Anyone on HRT, perimenopausal or after the menopause, including testosterone, when you or your prescriber want to see your levels.

What is Tasso+?

A small device that sits on your upper arm. Press its button, and a tiny lancet inside takes a small sample in a few minutes: no finger prick, and no needle into a vein. You post it back, and our UKAS-accredited partner laboratory in Northern Ireland tests it. Watch the film under “How it works”.

Will it tell me if I'm in the menopause?

No. NICE advises against hormone tests for that after 45, as levels change from day to day. Your GP or a menopause clinic can talk it through with you.

I use gel or cream. What should I do?

Using gel or cream? Put it on your legs, not your arms, on the day of your test, and take the sample before you put it on.

When should I take my sample?

At the same time of day each time, before that day's HRT if you can, so your results compare. Your prescriber may ask for a particular time.

How long until my results?

Results 2 to 3 working days after the lab receives your sample, and with you within a working day of the lab's report reaching us.

What if my sample can't be tested?

If the lab can't test your sample, for example because there isn't enough blood, we tell you and explain what happens next.

Who reads my results?

You do, with a plain explanation of each one. There's no clinician write-up: take them to your prescriber, who decides any change. Your summary for them has your HRT and your results on one page.

What's in the HRT year?

The HRT check, and a year of your results on one timeline beside your HRT, explained in plain words, with a summary for your prescriber. £129 a year, after 7 days free with no card.

Can I check my thyroid at the same time?

Yes. The thyroid and HRT year (£149) includes the full thyroid test and the HRT check, from one sample. HRT taken as tablets can change how much levothyroxine some people need.
