The film in words

Thyroglobulin (Tg) is made by thyroid cells. It helps the body make, store and release thyroid hormone.

After surgery and radioactive iodine for thyroid cancer, Tg shouldn’t be found in the blood, so it’s measured to keep watch.

Tg antibodies are found in about 1 in 10 people. Where they’re present, the Tg result is less reliable, so other ways of monitoring are used too.

When TSH is raised, Tg antibodies don’t usually add anything to TPO antibodies.

After thyroid cancer, your specialist team reads these results with you.
